What is The Eagle Award

The Eagle Award is an annual event held in the United Kingdom to honour notable achievements of black people across the world

Objectives

  • To celebrate the achievements and successes of people of African descent
  • To generate awareness of the notable achievements of black people around the world
  • To create role models for young people and inspire them with the confidence that they can make a difference inthe world and their communities

    Why this event?

  • The Eagle Award's mission is to reinforce all that is positive in our society as Africans and to inculcate in our youth a spirit of excellence and service to their immediate community
  • The Award wants to reward black leaders and positive role models who do not always get the recognition that they

SYDNEY POITIER Upon his release from duty he relocated to New York City, where he auditioned for the American Negro Theater. Sydney Poitier African American Hollywood SuperstarBorn February 20, 1927, in Miami, FL, Poitier grew up in poverty in the British West Indies. After quitting school at the age of 13, he later joined the U.S. Army, serving in World War II as a medical assistant. Upon his release from duty he relocated to New York City, where he auditioned for the American Negro Theater. Poitier made his Broadway debut in 1946 in an all-black production of Lysistrata, and moved into films four years later with No Way Out. Much to his credit, Poitier continued to make racially provocative films including Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)as the black fiancé of a white woman, Sidney Poitier was to Hollywood what Jackie Robinson was to major league baseball: simply put, the man who broke the color barrier.An actor, director, and producer, he forever altered the racial perceptions long held by both motion picture audiences and executives, rising to superstar status He has starred in countless movies becoming the first African-American ever to take home an Oscar for Best Actor.HONOURSOscar, Best Actor, Lilies of the Field, 1964,Golden Globe, Cecil B.
